Making a success of CE1D Stress-free: The Cogito Method
Every year, the CE1D (Certificat d'Études du Premier Degré) generates a great deal of stress among pupils. Which is only natural, as it's often the first avoidable exam our children face in secondary school. At Cogito, we offer a methodical approach to overcoming these challenges:
Identifying gaps
We start by assessing the specific needs of each student to target areas of weakness. One student may be weak in maths, but at ease in French. Another will have the greatest difficulty in Dutch, but be perfectly up to date in maths and science. A third will be at the same level everywhere, but needs reassurance. Each situation is individual and needs to be considered in the calm of an individual assessment, which relieves stress by objectifying strengths and weaknesses.
Individualised remedies
Through personalised follow-up, we tailor our teaching to fill these gaps effectively. If the problem is in maths, basic explanations are given before moving on to basic exercises. In French, English and Dutch, we don't hesitate to go over the basics when necessary. Ah, past participle agreement! These explanations enable the child to make progress, and to understand that he or she is making progress towards the goal, which reassures him or her and gives him or her the courage to work.
Test with CE1D past
We use CE1Ds from previous years to enable students to familiarise themselves with the format and level of the exam. Please note! It is preferable to finish the process with the CE1Ds from previous years; by trying too hard to solve them, children can sometimes become discouraged, realising that they are 'way off the mark'. The CE1D is also a specific exam because of the age of the pupils: they are still very young, so care must be taken to ensure their psychological comfort, and not to add unduly to the stress by adopting too cold and collective an approach.
